What reactive power is?

What is reactive power?

Where does reactive power come from?

The more of these types of devices operate within a facility, the higher the demand for reactive power.
In modern enterprises, capacitive reactive power is also increasingly common. It can occur, among other things, as a result of LED lighting systems, switch-mode power supplies, or extensive electronic installations.
Why does reactive power generate additional costs?
Although reactive power does not perform useful work, it loads the electrical grid. It causes additional current flow through cables, transformers, and other elements of the energy infrastructure.
For this reason, energy system operators define permissible levels of reactive power. If a company exceeds the established limits, additional charges may appear on the electricity bill.
In many cases, businesses are unaware for a long time that part of their energy costs results from excessive reactive power consumption. Only an analysis of electricity bills reveals that this issue generates significant financial losses.
How to check whether a company is paying for reactive power?
The simplest method is to analyze the electricity bill. Information regarding charges for reactive power is usually included in the detailed cost breakdown.
If the invoice contains items related to inductive or capacitive reactive energy, it means that the installation exceeds the permissible parameters defined by the grid operator.
In such a situation, it is recommended to carry out an electrical installation audit and analyze the network parameters. This allows identification of the source of the problem and selection of appropriate solutions to reduce additional costs.
